1. Apply for Employment Insurance Maternity and Parental Benefits

*You should apply as soon as you stop working, even if you receive or will receive money when you become unemployed
2. Apply for your Child’s Birth Certificate

*You should apply as soon as possible after your child is born
3. Register your Child for a Health Card

*When you receive your child’s birth certificate you will, in some cases, need to register your child for your provincial or territorial health plan
4. Apply for your Child’s Social Insurance Number (SIN)

*Residents of Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario can use the Newborn Registration Service
5. Apply for the Canada Child Tax Benefit

*This is a tax-free monthly payment made to eligible families to help them with the cost of raising children under age 18.
*You should apply for the CCTB as soon as possible after your child is born
