How to Not Lose Your Cool on You Kids

1. When my 5 year old throws a tantrum or gets upset about not getting her way, I find that the best way to deal with this is to remain calm, get down to her level and let her know that I understand her frustrations. I usually ask her if she needs a hug ( which she always does) and once she is calmer, we talk through whatever it was that got her so upset in the first place.

2. Let it go! Let it go! This is my mantra! When I get it in my brain to not sweat the small stuff, I find myself a much calmer and happier parent

3. Let them learn for themselves! Last winter my daughter, then 4, only wanted to wear dresses and thin tights. I fought with her every morning for one month about how it is too cold out and how she would freeze if she didn’t wear proper pants. One day, I said “fine you wear tights,” and that day she came home and told me she was cold during the day. That was the end of the tights at school.
