My surprising visit to a Jewish Day School
I had the chance recently to visit Paul Penna Downtown Jewish Day School.
Here is my list of surprises/pleasant discoveries!
1. Integrated Curriculum who knew! The school interweaves secular studies with the Judaics curriculum. Each home room teacher is versed in core subjects such, but also has expertise in the Jewish studies. It all works together through the use of thematic units (like You Only Get One Body in SK), where the Jewish and other subjects (like science, art and language arts) are taught under the framework of one big idea!
2. Its great to be different! The school has a very diverse population, so wherever you come from, whatever your family looks like, or however you relate to Judaism or to the world around you, it is not only OK it is welcomed and appreciated! The kids, parents and staff thrive in the colourful make up of their community fitting in means being yourself. Inclusive and Pluralistic inside and out.
3. Its in the JCC! Never realized all the perks that come with being housed right in the JCC
day care, nursery school, babysitting for when the kids are little, aftercare and after school activities for the bigger kids this means a lot less schleping!
4. Its in the DOWNTOWN JCC and its not so far! The school actually has a downtown vibe. This means fun, part of and open to the countless cultures, sites and sounds of a big city
creative, cosmopolitan and cool. The kids have ready access to museums and historic spots for special field trips and every-day learning, and amazingly it is only a 10 minute drive from Cedarvale! Right at at the Spadina subway too!
