Only one bad sunburn to double a person’s chance of getting melanoma

Monday May 4th was Melanoma Monday—an important reminder that skin cancer is the #1 cancer in Canada despite the fact that it is largely preventable with proper protection. That protection starts with parents.

The David Cornfield Melanoma Fund (the organization that brought us the award-winning viral video, Dear 16-Year-Old Me) and The Douglas Wright Foundation have created the most important video of the season, talking candidly with kids about family rules and who makes them. When it’s revealed that protecting their skin in the sun is not top of mind, the filmmakers poignantly urge parents to make sun protection their #newfamilyrule.

While at this time of year we all crave a little sun, it only takes one bad sunburn before the age of 18 to double a person’s chance of getting melanoma.
